Implementing the UK Biodiversity Action Plan - a practical guide

Sponsor a Species!

It is in the role of champions that mineral companies can perhaps best assist – bringing funds, as well as benefits such as expertise, laboratory facilities, and earth moving equipment – either as a sponsor or as a lead partner.

Lead partners have acknowledged conservation expertise and have been identified for all 116 first phase Species Action Plans, though more are required. Simply put, their role is to:

  • co-ordinate the preparation of work programmes with key partners
  • stimulate action
  • monitor programmes and report on progress

Sponsors can lend financial or in-kind aid to specific listed species by associating themselves with Species Action Plans. A small number of companies and individuals have already identified themselves as species champions: eg, ICI for the Large Blue and Pearl-Bordered Fritillary butterflies. And Tarmac is identified with the English Nature Species Recovery Programme.

Indeed, anywhere a priority species is found on land under their control, mineral companies can champion the cause: the Greater Horseshoe Bat in Case Example 5, or the Grey Partridge in Case Example 16 are good examples.
