Implementing the UK Biodiversity Action Plan - a practical guide

Home > Implementing the UK BAP > Species

Priority species for the minerals sector

An extensive breakdown of animals and plants which are relevant to minerals operators and are listed on the Short, Middle or Long List in the UK BAP can be accessed here. These include species likely to be found on land owned by mineral companies both within and outside extraction sites.

The lists derive from analysis of species Action Plans, and from consultation with Plantlife and Butterfly Conservation – agencies involved in the development of national biodiversity initiatives.

Plantlife is a voluntary organisation involved in the conservation of rare plants, and is cited in a number of the Short List Action Plans already published for vascular plants. It is also developing plans for several Middle and Long List species. Of the many vascular plants noted, four are highlighted as occurring in or close to active or restored mineral sites, with a recommendation that they be accorded particular attention:

Plant name Latin name Latin name
Early Gentian Perfoliate (Cotswold) Gentianella anglica Short List
Pennycress Thlaspi perfoliatum Middle List
Ground Pine Ajuga chamaepitys Long List
Broad-leaved Cudweed Filago pyramidata Long List

Butterfly Conservation is an NGO which has prepared (or is preparing) BAPs for the 25 butterfly species included on the three UK BAP lists. Of these, four are of special relevance to minerals operators due to their dependence on habitats associated with minerals sites:

Butterfly name
Silver Studded Blue
Adonis Blue
Northern Brown Argus *
Small Blue
Latin name
Plebejus argus
Lysandra bellargus
Aricia artaxerxes
Cupido minimus

If listed species are found on or near operators’ land, specialist advice should be sought as to how to protect and enhance the status of these wildlife priorities. Contact:
